On July 24, 2005, my children performed in CATS ON ICE. The experience is one they loved so much and want to remember forever. This is a memory journal of that wonderful experience.

Gus was played by Sammy Anderson. Sammy is working hard on his skating and is Annabelle's ice dance partner.

In CATS ON ICE, Sammy played GUS, an old theatre cat who tells about the victories he had in the past. Annabelle was his "kitten equivalent!"

The Big Day! July 24, 2005

July 24, 2005 was the big day!

It was wonderful!

We woke up early and Mommy put gel in Annabelle's and Rebekah's hair.

We arrived at the Sertich Ice Center at 9:30 AM. Mommy and Daddy left us there!

We spent the morning getting our make-up on and getting ready.

The first show started at 12:30 PM and was over at about 1:30 PM. Grandma and Grandpa came to see us.

Joel and Rebekah stayed at the rink the whole day, but Annabelle went home with Mommy and Daddy and took a bath and removed her make-up.

Joel and Rebekah got to eat a lot of food and watch THE ARISTOCATS.

Daddy brought Annabelle back to the rink at about 3:30 PM.

We got our make-up applied again and got ready again and put on another performance at 7:00 PM.

Everyone was more relaxed during the 2nd performance. Annabelle did a lot more moves in the GUS number, including waltz jumps and sit spins! Rebekah even did a flying camel. She also did many, many spins. Joel did a great flip jump and lots of great spins. It was fun to see our friends do spins, jumps, turns, and have fun skating as we performed.

Everyone was happy!

After the show was over, we went in the audience in our costume and said hello to all the wonderful people who came to watch us.

We hugged DeeDee good-bye. Wow did she do so much for us!

It didn't take long to change clothes and go home. We hugged many of our CATS friends good-bye. We will really miss them, but are glad there is going to be a chance to see eachother again when we do the show on stage in September.

We kept our make-up on until we got home. When we got home, we sang CATS songs and talked about how fun a day we had!

We will never forget this wonderful experience. Joel now wants to perform more and more and has improved so much at his skating. Annabelle and Rebekah both have improved at skating and acting too. We've made some wonderful friends.

We want to thank DeeDee for giving us an experience that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

A CAT is NOT a DOG!

One of our favorite songs was when Tommy Payne who played Old Deuteronomy sang "The Addressing of Cats."

Yes, we all needed to be reminded that a CAT is NOT a DOG!

Our family does not own a cat, but we do own a Pomeranian like the the one pictured above. Our little Pom loves us more than anything.

What we learned and what we bought about CATS

The purpose of this post is to share all the things we listened to, watched, bought, played on piano, and read about CATS THE MUSICAL.

Of course, we had to buy some songbooks to go with the musical to play on the piano! So Mommy bought us CATS - Easy Piano Picture Book. Now Rebekah and Joel and Mommy play songs from CATS on the piano daily! Our favorite song is probably the one about Mr. Mistofelees.

If you don't know this already, this musical is based on Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, by T.S. Eliot. Kelli Knight told us about the book, so we ordered it on Amazon. Soon we ordered the accompanying book on tape and listened to British voices reading us the poems. Rebekah has memorized every poem in the book!
All the poems are almost duplicated exactly word for word in this musical play by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Dillon Kelley had THE BOOK OF THE MUSICAL, so we ordered that too. It included photos from the stage show and also the songs and poems as they were performed in the musical.
We also have watched the video and DVD that includes "The Making of CATS." We have memorized every song and movement!

We recommend ordering any of the items we've suggested on Amazon.com.

We already owned a record of the original Broadway show. That too, is a must have!

All we are missing are CATS t-shirts!

In the late 1940s, our mommy's daddy, went to UCLA.

Grandpa made a best friend and lifelong friend in college.

Our grandfather's best friend and lifelong friend was Kelsey McKenna's grandfather!

Kelsey's mommy and daddy just happen to live in Colorado Springs. When Kelsey was a baby, our mommy wrote Kelsey's mommy a letter and they connected. Kelsey's mommy, Evony, mentioned to our mommy, Jo Ann, that Kelsey's daddy used to play hockey.

Soon, Jim began teaching learn to play hockey classes at the Chapel Hills Ice Rink. When Kelsey was old enough, she began skating lessons and a few years ago, she began private figure skating instruction under Jo Ann!

As time has passed, Kelsey and Rebekah and Annabelle have become very close friends.

Isn't that a neat story?

And...now we are all doing CATS ON ICE together! Who would have thought that two young men who met in the late 1940s would have grandchildren skating and performing together in the year 2005???!!!

Annabelle's Birthday!

Today is Annabelle's birthday!

Since we are supposed to stay home to rest for tomorrow's big show, we just had a small party this afternoon.

Grandma and Grandpa came over and we had cupcakes in the kitchen! Last night, Grandma and Grandpa took us out to dinner at Red Robin and Annabelle got a special birthday sundae and a special song sung to her in the restaurant!

Annabelle got a bedroom set that included a canopy, a comforter, curtains, shams, and matching sheets.

Grandma and Grandpa got her a Barbie CD player.

She also got some gifts from her CATS friends. Kelsey gave her a bunch of stuff and so did Sammy.

Annabelle is so happy and we are all excited about tomorrow! What a neat birthday!

A week of rehearsals in a row!

Wow, did we have a busy week!

We had rehearsals every day this week -- Monday through Friday!

We did the full performance on Monday and Tuesday at the Lon Chaney Theater and then on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we had ON ice and OFF ice rehearsals at Sertich Ice Center.

We went through most of the show on all those days and wore our fur on Wednesday and Thursday.

DeeDee was always so encouraging at every rehearsal and we had so much fun.

We get tomorrow off to rest and then we perform on Sunday! Yippee!!!

Special MaCavity Crew practice

Joel and Isabella and Dillon had a special practice for MaCavity's Crew today. Now they have a choreographed number that includes salchows and everything! Old Deuteronomy will bend down so they can get the net over his head as they capture him.

Joel also spend some time with DeeDee practicing his bow and his "Mean Like A Minx" line (when he's Carbuckety).

After the practice, Joel switched to his hockey skates and enjoyed playing with Dillon and Kevin.

Joel has really enjoyed the friends he's made during CATS (especially Dillon and Kevin).

Wow, we really have been busy!

We had a rehearsal on the ice before the July 4th weekend (Friday, July 1st) and then after the 4th, we went to Lon Chaney Theater on July 5th, followed by rehearsals on the ice on July 6th, July 8th, July 9th, and July 10th!

Mommy gave a lesson during the public session at Sertich on Sunday, July 10th. When she was teaching we were off the ice playing with Torrie Krantz's REAL kitten!

DeeDee gave us a bunch of flyers to post EVERYWHERE during the upcoming week. We got our pictures back and a group photo of the cast is on the flyer.

Make-up and Photos!

It's been a busy week again.

What made it wonderful was we had another rehearsal at the Lon Chaney Theater on Monday and then on Wednesday we got to practice getting make-up put on us!

Then on Thursday, we put on make-up again and had official photos taken.

Wearing our full costumes with make-up got us SO EXCITED!

Painted SETS!

Today we got to go to Sertich in messy painting clothes and help paint sets for CATS ON ICE!

Kelly Baker brought these wonderful pictures she drew of CATS and Rebekah was so impressed!

Annabelle even got paint on her feet!

We painted trash cans and cereal boxes.

While we painted, Mommy subbed two of the Learn to Skate Classes for Sertich Ice Center.

After painting, we watched the Sertich Learn-to-Skate Recital. DeeDee's son performed at the end of the recital. Wow, he's a great jumper!

Then, we went and watched more of The Broadmoor Open and bought a bunch of stuff there too. Rebekah has a beautiful new red and white dress and Annabelle has a skating dress that looks like it is from the Wizard of Oz.

We saw some really good skating at The Broadmoor Open. Joel's favorite event was Novice Men. Everyone was impressed with the ice dancers and pair skaters.

We've had off-ice and on-ice rehearsals for the past two weeks and today we had another rehearsal at the Lon Chaney Theater.

On Friday, after skating in the morning, we plan to go and watch the Broadmoor Open.

Got fitted for our unitards today!

Today we went to Assemble Dancewear and got fitted for our unitards.

Joel is very happy that the boys WILL NOT be wearing unitards, but black under-armour instead with black pants.

The unitards are just plain white, but DeeDee will dye them.

We ended up buying a bunch of stuff for skating and then went off to Chapel Hills to practice.

We skated all day at Chapel Hills since we didn't have to rush to a CATS ON ICE rehearsal.

We did the whole show on the ice -- twice!

Today we did the entire show on the ice and we did it twice! We got to wear our fur and and ears and tails and we practiced with props and a set!

We get Monday off to get fitted for our costumes!

It's been a busy week of off-ice rehearsals. Tomorrow, we have an ON ice rehearsal at Sertich, but today, we got to rehearse on the stage at Lon Chaney Theater!

Rebekah and Annabelle decided to wear their best "theater clothes" for the occasion!

They looked so cute in glittering pants and shiny jazz shirts. They even put glittering bows in their hair!

We went through the entire show on the stage! We can't wait to do the whole thing tomorrow on the ice!

We All Competed in the Pikes Peak Classic!

All three of us competed in the Pikes Peak Classic.

Joel and Rebekah competed in Preliminary Dance and got first place!

Annabelle was First in Artistic Basic.

On Sunday, Joel and Rebekah competed in Hockey! Joel got 5 First Places and Rebekah got 7!

Rebekah was Third in Pre-Pre Girls and Pre-Pre Artistic and Second in Preliminary Solo Dance.

We'd love to take a day off tomorrow, but we have another CATS ON ICE rehearsal and we also begin Tennis Lessons!

Vacation!

We are in Larkspur now taking a short vacation.

Yesterday, Mommy went to the Professional Skaters Conference and learned a bunch of stuff about coaching skating.

Now we are just relaxing at Grandma and Grandpa's Larkspur house.

We've listened to CATS music ALOT!

We've also played the neat new digital piano that is here and watched a lot of movies on the big TV screen.

We took some walks on the beautiful property here and made fancy dinners.

We needed this time off, but we can't wait to get back on the ice after Memorial Day!

Ballet Recital!

Annabelle and Rebekah performed beautifully at the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs Children's Recital at Rampart High School. They had a dress rehearsal yesterday and then a performance and a performance today.

The name of the performance was "In the Garden."

Rebekah was a fairy and Annabelle was a flower.

Joel was a great big brother!

We had to miss two off-ice Cats on Ice rehearsals for this event. (It turned out those were the ONLY rehearsals we missed!)

Ballet Society of Colorado Springs gave a gift towards sponsoring us in CATS ON ICE!

Saw STAR WARS today!

Sertich is shut-down and we are officially on vacation (sort of). We have some obligations this week with a ballet recital and the Professional Skaters Conference in Denver, but we are still "off" from regular activities.

We began our week by going to a morning show of STAR WARS.

The movies was great and Mommy cried!

Joel brought his Darth Vader Voice Changer Mask and we ate popcorn and played video games.

We had a blast.

First ON Ice Rehearsal!

Today was really exciting for all the cast, since we got to go on the ice.

Joel was unable to wear his figure skates since the pain on his heel was so bad and the figure skates fit so snugly, but was able to do the rehearsal in his ice hockey skates. In fact, he skates so well in hockey skates, it didn't matter really.

There were several children that tried "walking" on the ice without skates too.

Everyone was delighted to try what they had learned off the ice ON ice!

After the rehearsal, Rebekah stayed and skated the public session with Kelsey McKenna and Kelli Knight. Mommy gave Kelsey a private lesson at the beginning of the session and then the kids had a chance to play.

What's really neat about this experience is that the children are enjoying their friends so very much!

Joel has an accident

Today we rehearsed off-ice in the Sertich Ice Center lobby.

You see, the rink is going to be shut down shortly for its yearly maintenance, so we had the entire lobby to ourselves. DeeDee gave us the words to "The Naming of Cats." Rebekah memorized all the words by the time we got home!

Mommy had planned to teach Kelsey McKenna during the public session that followed, but that session was cancelled, so we rushed home to get ready to go to Pueblo to roller skate.

However, Joel had an accident, so we did not go roller skating in Pueblo.

This is what happened:

Joel was very, very excited because STAR WARS -- Revenge of the Sith was out and we were going as a family, on Monday, May 23rd (first show of the morning).

Anyway, he really wanted a Darth Vader Voice Changer toy and so, before going to Pueblo, Daddy took Joel to Target to buy the toy.

When Joel arrived home, he was so excited that he jumped out of the car before Daddy had completely stopped the car and the rear wheel ran over Joel's right foot's heel!

Terror!

Well, instead of spending the day happily roller skating, we ended up in the Memorial Hospital Emergency Room.

We are very thankful that Joel's foot was not hurt and only bruised. Well, child locks now are being used again!

We are wondering how Joel will do at the CATS rehearsal tomorrow since it is the first one ON ice!

Money due today

Today is Monday, May 16.

Mommy took us skating at Sertich this morning. It was fun. Wow, the session was so short though. We practiced our jumps, spins, moves in the field, and some ice dances. Annabelle played and skated! Mommy is trying hard to get her to jump in the right direction!

We went home for awhile and practiced piano and did some schoolwork. We all did math, reading, spelling, and handwriting. We listened to CATS music too!

We arrived at Sertich early for another off-ice practice that was from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

Mommy has already found some people that have given a little towards sponsoring us in this project. Mommy had over $100 to give to DeeDee! Good start, Mommy!

Sertich is so close to Daddy's work, that he is walking from downtown to meet us after work. This is really going to be a neat adventure!

Our 2nd Rehearsal and also a special day for Joel the Cub Scout!

Today is Saturday and we couldn't wait to go to another off-ice rehearsal. Joel also had a special "Crossing Over Cub Scout" ceremony in the morning at Palmer Park, so it was a really busy day! He's now a Webolo 2 Cut Scout!

Today's rehearsal had been scheduled at Lon Chaney Theatre which is downtown, but when DeeDee arrived, a set was being built on the stage she was going to have us use, so she called everyone and told them to go to Sertich's Clubhouse once again.

It was a fun rehearsal. At the end, we went outside and DeeDee gave us CDs of the music and scripts of the entire performance. We learned most of the "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats" number!

Our First Rehearsal!

Today we had Homeschoolers Gymnastics from 11:30 am --12:30 pm and then rushed to the Chapel Hills rink.

We skated until 3:00 PM. Mommy had us wear jazz clothes to skate in so we'd be prepared for our first off-ice rehearsal.

We arrived at Sertich at about 3:50 PM. So many children had already arrived!

DeeDee didn't take long to get things going; she did some fun warm-up exercises and got right into teaching us the first number in the show, "Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats."

DeeDee has a special version that includes kittens singing and dancing!

We loved our first rehearsal! It ended at 6:00 PM, but I think we could have stayed longer since it was so much fun. DeeDee even brought us snacks!

The Cast is Announced!

We received an email today that announced what parts everyone was cast in!

Rebekah is the kitten Bombalurina, a very sexy kitten!

Annabelle is the kitten Gus whose real name is Asparagus. Annabelle wasn't thrilled at first about being a boy cat, but once DeeDee told her that Asparagus was an important and famous kitten, she grew to like her part!

Joel is Carbuckety and also MaCavity's Crew. He's a cat.

We watched CATS and listened to CATS!

Mommy recorded CATS from a record and we have begun to listen to the musical in the car and at home and wherever we go! We love the music!

We also have watched the CATS video that we've owned since 1998 over and over and over.

We are trying to understand the story. Mommy admits she never watched the whole thing before and has always wondered why the kids enjoyed it so much!

(Remember the Christmas we got the video? It was the year Jo Ann's sister, Lynnellen, received two copies, so we bought her something else, and kept this one.)

What we did on Saturday, May 7 (fhe official CATS ON ICE Audition Day)

May 7th was a big day for the Farris Family. It was "Mommy's Birthday!"

Also...Rebekah performed in ALICE IN WONDERLAND with Attitudes Performing Arts Academy.

She was the cook and also a bluebird.

After the performance, we went out to eat to celebrate "Mommy's Birthday" at the kids' favorite place, Souper Salad!

Audition Day!

Well, DeeDee called me during the last week of April. An audition was set up especially for my children at the Chapel Hills Ice Rink on Monday, May 2nd!

The children were SO EXCITED!

Rebekah and Annabelle dressed in black audition dance clothes and put on new tights. I put their hair up in a bun. Joel wore black dress pants and a black turtleneck. Each child looked GREAT!

We arrived at the rink early.

When DeeDee arrived, the kids were thrilled. She arrived early too!

She auditioned the children off the ice. They were so happy they had their black jazz shoes with them!

Each child was auditioned privately.

Rebekah went first, followed by Annabelle, and then Joel. Annabelle's favorite part of the audition was making cute faces! Rebekah loved doing cartwheels. Joel was nervous, but had a blast since DeeDee made the audition so fun!

DeeDee gave us special folders with a schedule of rehearsals and other information!

Wow, what an exciting day!

After DeeDee left, we stayed and practiced hard at our skating for the rest of the afternoon. Boy, were we happy!

Dear DeeDee:

I would like my 3 children to do Cats on Ice.

I have some questions (of course! Don't all parents?) First, let me tell you about my kids.

My daughter Rebekah may be performing in Alice in Wonderland your audition day and it may be a matinee (mosty likely) and can't make the 11:30--1 PM audition on May 7. Is it possible for you to audition her at a different time? Actually, my other 2 may have to audition at a different time if this Alice in Wonderland musical conflicts since I don't know if our family could be 2 places at once since we only have one car.

Rebekah is skating at Pre-pre level and is taking her pre-pre moves and pre-pre FS this Sunday, April 24. She just turned 9 and sings and dances too and has been in 2 musicals so far in the chorus and had small parts too and she did the lead roles in couple of "school plays" at Attitudes Performing Arts Academy and was also in the Nutcracker. She is my talented one! She is working on her preliminary dances too, but they are not at test level yet, but she is amazing at memorizing dance steps, etc.

Next, Annabelle is 5 and will be 6 on July 23. She loves to dance and sing and skates not quite at the level you need (she's kind of at Basic 5/6), but probably would be fine in a non-skating part for her age level. She was also in the Nutcracker this year. She just loves to dance!

Joel, 11, is ice dancing and working on his pre-pre tests. He is my difficult one. If boys are in this, he'll do it. He was in the Nutcracker this year and did a fantastic job playing one of the bad children. He would do best at a skating part I think. He's skating at about a FS 3 level to give you an idea and has memorized tons of ice dances, so I think he could do this. He was in the chorus in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and enjoyed himself and liked learning to sing and dance.

Today (April 21, 2005) I took Rebekah to Sertich Ice Center to get some extra practice in before her Pre-Pre Moves in the Field and Pre-Pre Freestyle test. I saw a flyer about auditions for CATS ON ICE! My children and I have to check this out!
